About the data. The starting compilation of peoples, languages, history, culture and traditional institutions was made by the atlas editor from standard references, including Ethnologue, Glottolog and Roger Blench's An Atlas of Nigerian Languages . LGA assignments show where a people is concentrated, not every place they live. Nigeria has more than 500 living languages, so the atlas grows through community contributions, which are reviewed before they appear.
Population. State and LGA figures are the 2006 National Population Census and the National Population Commission's 2022 projections, as compiled by citypopulation.de. Nigeria's census does not count ethnicity, so population shares for peoples are published estimates and are labelled with their source. No population is shown for a people without a published estimate.
Photographs are shared by contributors, who confirm they took the photo or have permission to share it and that the people pictured agreed.
